How Much Hair Loss Is Normal?

How much hair loss is normal? This is a question that many people have, and it can be difficult to determine what is considered normal hair loss or not freak out when you see how much hair is in the shower drain after you wash your hair.

At Freedom Hair Artistry, we believe in educating our clients, in this blog post, we will discuss hair loss in detail and help put your mind at ease.

We will also provide tips on how to maintain healthy hair and identify any potential problems early on.

On average, it is normal to lose between 80-100 hairs per day, yes that’s right every day! For some people up to 150 strands come out every day and this is still considered normal.

If you have longer hair, it’s likely that you will see more hair in the drain than someone with shorter hair. The reason for this is that each individual strand of hair has a growth cycle consisting of three phases: anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting).

At any given time, approximately 85-90% of hair follicles are in the anagen or growth phase.

This is why hair loss can seem more dramatic when you have longer hair because you have more hairs in the shedding, or telogen, phase at one time.

The good news is that hair loss is usually temporary and your hair will eventually return to its normal thickness.

If you’ve noticed a significant increase in hair loss, this is when you should start to pay attention to how much hair you’re losing.

Whilst, we don’t recommend counting your strands of hair you lose in the shower, we do recommend you eyeball the amount you are losing.

There are lots of things that can cause hair loss and most of them are fixable, so you shouldn’t be too worried.

Some of the things that can contribute to excessive hair loss are:

  • A poor diet
  • Not getting enough sleep
  • Stress
  • Certain medical conditions or treatments
  • Overuse of hair products
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Mineral deficiencies
  • Significant weight gain/weight loss

Fortunately, there are also many things you can do to prevent hair loss, promote hair growth and restore your hair’s thickness.

A healthy diet is important for hair health just like it is for the rest of your body. Ensuring you are eating plenty of protein, vitamins, and minerals is essential for hair growth but also the overall health of your hair.

You can also take supplements such as biotin or fish oil to promote hair growth from the inside out.

Getting enough sleep is important for hair health since hair follicles can be damaged during periods of stress and this can lead to hair loss. Try to get at least eight hours of sleep every night and if you are dealing with a lot of stress in your life, find ways to manage it such as yoga, meditation, or talking to a therapist.

Using hair products that are gentle on your hair and don’t strip it of its natural oils are important for maintaining healthy hair. Look for products that are sulphate-free and avoid heat styling your hair whenever possible, or if you do ensure you use a heat protectant spray.

Finally, get regular in salon hair treatments to protect the health of your hair that are specifically targeted for your hair concerns which in turn will help prevent hair loss.
